Writer's picture: The YSIThe YSI

Frida Kahlo is perhaps one of the most famous female artists in history. Born in 1907, in Mexico City, Kahlo’s career was dominated by her ability to break the mould and challenge commonly accepted attitudes towards gender, sexuality and disability at the time.

Throughout her career Kahlo created works which depicted real women in real situations. Her work ‘Henry Ford Hospital’ painted in 1932 makes reference to Kahlo’s inability to have children. Works like this are typical of Kahlo’s graphic and truthful style which makes no attempt to hide away from important subjects.

Kahlo embraced every aspect of her character and used this to shape her art. She is undoubtedly one of the most significant artists, activists and feminists of the 20th century and her work continues to inspire people today.
