We were deeply concerned to hear last week that both the UK Government and the Hungarian Government have plans to strip back the existing rights of Trans people. The UK Government’s Minister for Women and Equalities, Liz Truss MP, announced that the UK Government wants to ‘protect’ under 18s from making ‘irreversible’ decisions, which will restrict Trans children and young people from accessing existing healthcare provisions, hormones and support. The Minister also mentioned the UK Government’s desire to bring in new ‘checks and balances’ for Trans people accessing single-sex services, despite the fact that many have been using services that match their gender without issue for many years. We strongly believe this should not change. This also follows recent reports that Hungarian Prime Minister, Viktor Orbán, has been using the distractions of the COVID-19 pandemic as an opportunity to push through legislation that threatens existing Trans rights. The legislation will end the legal recognition of Trans people in Hungary and would make it impossible for citizens to legally change their gender. This could lead to a number of serious consequences for members of the Trans community. Viktor Orbán is no stranger to breaking human rights laws and he must be held accountable. Which is why we are calling for international action to stop allowing this abuse of power and infringement of rights. The YSI always have and always will stand in solidarity with our Trans siblings across the world. We will continue to condemn any attempts to reduce the rights of the Trans community. The UK and Hungarian Governments’ recent steps threaten the lives of innocent people. It is unacceptable. We cannot and will not stand by and be silent. In response to these announcements, we have signed the petition below calling out Liz Truss, alongside the Scottish Trans Alliance and other Trans organisations and we will continue to make noise and defend the rights of Trans people for as long as we need to. We are also working with members of the European Free Alliance Youth to give our support and solidarity to Hungary and it’s citizens. Trans rights are human rights, and they should not be up for debate.
We have added our voice to this petition that calls for a hault on the UK Government’s plans which threaten the future of young Transgender people. Join us by signing your name too.
